Summer Painting!

We've been enjoying our summer vacation with little trips and lots of lazy days!  Best summer ever when hubby gets three straight weeks off from work!!

Like many places this summer, we've been getting quite the heat waves!  On days that are too hot to go on an outdoor adventure, we've found some painting projects, here is a couple and how they led into more ideas!

I coloured some glue bottles with food colouring, an idea I got from Almost Unschoolers, I also added some glitter shakers on the craft tray for added pizazz!

Butterfly loves a good sensory experience, so any artwork can turn into a crazy abstract finger painting of course! :)

Butterfly found a "polar bear rock", she called it, on one of our little summer getaways, she wanted to paint it all sorts of colours.  She picked out her acrylic paints and went to town painting her polar bear into a rainbow!

 Rock painting is very relaxing!

There was still a good amount of paint left when she was done her rock, so I pulled out a canvas board from our craft resources and she continued her rainbow theme of many colours and painted a canvas picture!

And we finally tried Homemade Puffy Paint!  I've been dying to try this with Butterfly ever since I saw it on One Crafty Mum  and   Housing a Forest.

1/2 cup flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp salt, food colouring, enough water to make a paste, and pieces of cardboard (that will fit in your microwave).

We started off using paint brushes and cotton swabs.

I couldn't resist, I love crafting too!!

It's a wet paste when painting with it, when the creation is complete, pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds and out it comes puffy and dry!

A great texture board, Butterfly just loved touching it and feeling it.  I was thinking, this would be a great idea for toddlers.  Make a couple of boards and post them around the room at their height, and it's a great texture learning experience as children are so tactile.  Plus, it's even safe as the ingredients are just food ingredients!

We never let left over paint materials go to waste!  Next, we scooped the rest of the puffy paint into a squirt bottle, in rainbow colour! :)

I have to say, Puffy Paint is way more fun and a lot easier to use, using a squirt bottle then trying to paint with thick paste!

Butterfly loves any kind of squeeze painting (that's how our coloured glue project got started!)  Something about squeezing thick liquid out and watching the line of paint twirl and twist down into your creation!

I hope we inspired some Summer Painting projects... I have more in mind for Butterfly to try! You'll soon find out...  :)

Ponds and Bugs - Felt Board Songs and Books!

During our Pond unit, Butterfly and I have used our Felt Board for songs, rhymes, and fingerplays!  These are the felt board sets I've made for her, and all the songs that go with each set that we use.  Perfect for ponds and bugs!

Five Green and speckled frogs,
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One frog jumped in the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only four speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.
Four Green and speckled frogs,
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One frog jumped in the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only three speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.
Three Green and speckled frogs,
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,
Yum, Yum.
One frog jumped in the pool,
Where it was nice and cool,
Now there are only two speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.
Two Green and speckled frogs,
Sitting on a hollow log,
Eating some most delicious bugs,

Now there are no speckled frogs,
Glub, glub.

Five little froggies sitting on a well
One leaned over and in he fell.
And the froggies jumped high,
And the froggies jumped low,
And the froggies jumped everywhere,
To and fro!
Four little froggies sitting on a well
One leaned over and in he fell.
And the froggies jumped high,
And the froggies jumped low,
And the froggies jumped everywhere,
To and fro!
Count down to none!

-----------

This little froggy broke his toe
This little froggy said, "Oh, oh, oh!"
This little froggy laughed and was glad.
This little froggy cried and was sad,
This little froggy did just what he should
He ran for the Doctor as fast as he could.

-----------

Five little froggies sat on a shore
One went for a swim, then there were four
Four little froggies looked out to sea
One went swimming, and then there were three
Three little froggies said "What can we do?"
One jumped in the water, then there were two
Two little froggies sat in the sun
One swam off, and then there was one
One little froggie said "This is no fun!"
He dived in the water, and then there were none!

Sung to:  "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Flutter, flutter, butterfly.
Floating in the summer sky.
Floating by for all to see,
Floating by so merrily.
Flutter, flutter, butterfly,
Floating in the summer sky.

-----------

Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Into a corner crept, (place right pointer finger in left cupped hand)
Spun around himself a blanket (spin around)
Then for a long time slept. (place head on folded hands)
Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Wakening by and by, ("stretch" right pointer finger)
Found himself with beautiful wings
Changed to a butterfly. (flutter arms like wings)

-----------

Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar in the garden creeps
He spins himself a blanket and soon falls fast asleep.
Fuzzy wuzzy caterpillar wakes up by and by
To find he has wings of beauty, changed to a butterfly.

Pretty little butterfly, what do you do all day?
I fly around the flowerpots, nothing' to do but play.
Nothing' to do but play, darling', nothing' to do but play.
So fly butterfly, fly butterfly, don't waste your time away.

-----------

Sung to: "Skip to My Lou"

I'm a butterfly, come fly with me
I'm a butterfly, come fly with me
I'm a butterfly, come fly with me
Come fly with me, my darling

A butterfly, come drink nectar with me
A butterfly, come drink nectar with me
A butterfly, come drink nectar with me
Drink nectar with me, my darling.

A butterfly, now sleep like me
A butterfly, now sleep like me
A butterfly, now sleep like me
Come sleep like me, my darling.

-----------

Sung to: "Oh Christmas Tree"

Oh, butterfly, Oh, butterfly
How I love your colors.
Oh, butterfly, Oh, butterfly
How I love your colors.
You fly so high and beautiful,
Your so soft and gentle.
Oh, butterfly, Oh, butterfly,
How I love your colors.

Bumble Bees

One little bee blew and flew.
He met a friend, and that made two.

Two little bees, busy as could be--
Along came another and that made three.

Three little bees, wanted one more,
Found one soon and that made four.

Four little bees, going to the hive.
Spied their little brother, and that made five.

Five little bees working every hour--
Buzz away, bees, and find another flower.

-----------

One little honeybee by my window flew;
Soon came another - then there were two.
Two happy honeybees in the apple tree;
One more bee came buzzing up - then there were three.
Three busy honeybees starting to explore
Another bee came to help - then there were four.
Four laden honeybees flying to the hive;
They were joined by one more bee - then there were five.
Five tired honeybees with the others mix;
Now there's a swarm of them - a hundred times six.

-----------

Sung to: "Jingle Bells"

Bumble Bee, bumble bee,
Landing on my nose,
Bumble bee, bumble bee,
Now he's on my toes.

On my arms, on my legs,
On my elbows.
Bumble bee, oh bumble bee
He lands, and then he goes.

-----------

6 buzzing bumblebees
Flying around the hive
One buzzes off and that leaves 5.
5 buzzing bumblebees
Flying near my door,
1 buzzes off and that leaves 4
4 buzzing bumblebees
Flying around a tree,
1 busses off and that leaves 3
3 buzzing bumblebees
In the sky so blue
1 buzzes of and that leaves 2
2 buzzing bumblebees
Flying by the sun
1 buzzes off and that leaves 1
1 buzzing bumblebee
Looking for some fun
It buzzes off and that leaves none.

-----------

Five little busy bees on a day so sunny.
Number one said, I’d like to make some honey.
Number two said, Tell me where shall it be?
Number three said, In the old honey-tree.
Number four said, Let’s gather nectar sweet.
Number five said, Let’s take pollen on our feet.
Humming their busy little honeybee song.
Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

-----------

Here is the beehive, where are the bees
Hidden away were nobody sees
Watch and you will see them come out of their hives,
One, two, three, four, five,
Buzz, buzz, buzz.

-----------

I'm bringing home my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm bringing home my baby bumblebee
ooh, eee, it stung me!

I'm letting go my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm letting go my baby bumblebee
Bye. Bye. Bumblebee!

I'm a little ladybug on the go,
Landing on an arm, and now an elbow.
See me fly 'round and 'round your hand,
Now watch as on your thumb I land.
I'm a little ladybug searching for some toes,
But instead I'll simply land on your nose.
Now I look around and head for your hair,
I muss it up a bit, then pat it down with care.
I'm a little ladybug looking for a knee,
I'm just so happy you're not bugged by me.
Now you see me heading for your chest,
This little ladybug needs some rest.

-----------

Five little ladybugs climbing up a door
One flew away and then there were four

Four little ladybugs sitting on a tree
One flew away and then there were three

Three little ladybugs landed on a shoe
One flew away and then there were two

Two little ladybugs looking for some fun
One flew away and then there was one

One little ladybug sitting in the sun
She flew away and then there were none!

See the Ladybug - sung to "Frere Jacques"

See the ladybug, see the ladybug.
Watch it crawl, watch it crawl.
See it crawling higher,
See it crawling higher.
Watch it crawl, up the wall.

See the ladybug, see the ladybug.
Watch it crawl, watch it crawl.
See it crawling lower,
See it crawling lower.
Way down low, to my toe.

-----------

Ladybug - sung to "The Muffin Man"

Lucky ladybug has two spots
Has two spots, has two spots
Lucky ladybug has two spots
Lucky ladybug

(Count more spots)

-----------

Found a Ladybug - sung to "Oh, My Darling Clementine"

Found a ladybug, found a ladybug,
Found a ladybug just now.
Just now I found a ladybug,
Found a ladybug just now.

It was red, it was red,
It was red just now.
It was red with black spots,
Red with black spots just now.

Six little ducks
That I once knew
Fat ones, skinny ones,
Fair ones, too
But the one little duck
With the feather on his back
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

Quack, quack, quack,
Quack, quack, quack
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

Down to the river
They would go
Wibble, wobble, wibble, wobble,
To and fro
But the one little duck
With the feather on his back
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

Quack, quack, quack,
Quack, quack, quack
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

Back from the river
They would come
Wibble, wobble, wibble, wobble,
Ho, hum, hum
But the one little duck
With the feather on his back
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

Quack, quack, quack,
Quack, quack, quack
He led the others
With a quack, quack, quack

-----------

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack."
And all of the five little ducks came back.

-----------

One little duck in the pond so blue
Called for a friend...Quack
And then there were two.
Two little ducks swimming round with glee
Called for a friend...quack, quack
And then there were three.
Three little ducks, paddling near the shore
Called for a friend...quack, quack, quack
And then there were four.
Four little ducks, learning how to dive
Called for a friend..quack, quack, quack, quack
And then there were five.
Five little ducks near the end of day
Hear their mothers calling
And they all swim away.

-----------

This funny duck went waddle, waddle, waddle.
This funny duck went paddle, paddle, paddle.
This funny duck went “Quack, quack, quack.”
This funny duck wiggled its tail at the back.
And this funny duck, the very last,
Jumped in the water and went splash, splash, splash!

Another Pond Adventure!

We went on another Pond Adventure, this time this pond had bigger lilly pads, and a ton of ducks!  We went with our friends and brought a whole bag of bread to feed the ducks ... and the fish! If the ducks weren't fast enough the big fishies would slurp up the floating bread pieces.  Here are our photos:

Finding treasures!

We met another Dragonfly!

I have noticed Butterfly's growing appreciation in ponds and it's wonderful details! :)
